ACRYLIC PAINTING I have always been captivated by the vastness and diversity of Manitoba's landscapes. From the golden prairies that seem to stretch endlessly beneath the expansive sky to the dense, mysterious forests of the north, each corner of this province tells a unique story. Learn more about Canadian Artist Lee Beaton, her creative journey, artistic process, and work across acrylic, ceramic, mixed media, and portraiture. Based in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. ARTIST - LEE BEATON BioGRAPHY Lee Beaton is a multi-disciplinary visual artist based in Portage la Prairie, MB. She is currently pursuing her Bachelor of Fine Arts Honours Degree at Brandon University while working full-time as the Manager of Gallery Operations at Prairie Fusion Arts & Entertainment, the Art Gallery and performance theatre in Portage la Prairie. Beaton has held several Solo Exhibitions and has participated in numerous group exhibits at several galleries including Between IV, at the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba in Brandon in 2018. In 2019, the Community Foundation of Portage and District commissioned Beaton to create fifty unique conceptual paintings of their logo. Beaton was named Portage la Prairie’s Arts and Cultural Person of the Year for 2017. Her recent projects include a Solo Exhibition, Gala Fundraiser Paintings at Prairie Fusion Arts & Entertainment’s Pop-Up Gallery in 2020 and her 2021 Solo Exhibit, Wide Open in Winnipeg at Cre8ery Gallery & Studio and her Solo Exhibition, Life’s Journey: Persistence & Recovery displayed at Prairie Fusion Arts & Entertainment in 2024. Artist Statement Life is complex, and we view ourselves through the filters thrust upon us by our circumstances. Exploring colour, texture, and perspective in a variety of mediums and styles, I share a part of myself in each piece. From the hypnotic turn of the wheel to the stroke of the brush on canvas or paper, a sense of intrigue and mystery shines through in the beauty created. Creating artworks that are significant to my life, referencing my past and how it has influenced my life today, is an important aspect of my art practice. Looking closer at my past has helped me to share my story while also inspiring others with the hope of overcoming darkness and trauma. I like using colour and texture in unusual ways, often creating non-typical portraits of people and animals. In my paintings, I switch between brushes and palette knives, creating texture with each application of paint. Each layer added contains a variety of materials and techniques. Using image transfers and collage as a base leads to added texture. I use photographs that I have taken when I am out living life as inspiration for my work. Sometimes I am drawn to the intensity of the clouds in the sky or the contrast of the blues and greens, or shadows cast on the snow. Each photo captures a moment, and each painting captures my response to that moment. Using photographs as guides, I adapt the painting or drawing to what feels satisfying, loosely creating an image filled with beauty and emotions. Overcoming barriers, both real and perceived, has guided me to see beauty where others might not. This has pushed me to go beyond my comfort level and has helped me develop creatively. Incorporating imaginary and real subjects into each painting and ceramic piece brings a closer understanding of who I am and where I came from. Creating is a catalyst that brings a deeper understanding and healing of my past. When darkness is flooded with light, imperfections become visible. For me, sharing my flaws under a positive light offers hope to others that we can rise above our circumstances and become stronger. Creating art is how I share life’s beauty. Abstract painter. CERAMIC The story behind the object. The story of my journey with clay is a tale of passion and creativity. From the moment I first encountered the tactile nature of clay, there was an undeniable connection. Each piece begins as a simple block of raw material, but under my skilled hands, it transforms into a work of art imbued with emotion and meaning. My journey into ceramics was not a straightforward path. Initially drawn to other forms of art, it wasn't until a friend invited me to a pottery class that the spark was ignited. The feel of the clay, cool and malleable, awakened a new sense of expression and possibility. It was as if the clay itself whispered stories waiting to be told. Through countless hours in the studio, I experimented with different techniques, from wheel throwing to hand building. The process became a meditation, a dance between structure and spontaneity. Each creation carried the imprint of my emotions, capturing moments of joy, introspection, and discovery. Memories are often fragmented or distorted yet remain buried in the subconscious until recalled and reshaped. The teapot serves as a central symbol within this series, representing slowness, conversation, and imagination. Childhood memories of my grandmother’s musical teapot, displayed prominently in her china cabinet, form the conceptual foundation of this work.  In the studio, I transform fragments of memory into clay. The rhythmic motion of the pottery wheel becomes a meditative process, allowing memories to surface as the vessels take form. Once assembled, sections of each teapot are cut away, creating openings that act as repositories for narrative memory. Underglaze is used to paint imagery drawn from the subconscious and old photographs, while glazing completes the piece. Each object functions simultaneously as a teapot and a narrative container.  As these memories emerge, I am drawn to the specific locations tied to each memory. Each piece in this series is rooted in the boundaries of my grandparents’ farm, where much of my childhood was spent outdoors exploring the land. From climbing tree to inventing adventures among abandoned cars, old wood stoves, and the junk pile, imagination shaped my experiences. These once-distant fragments of memories are now permanently captured in clay. I have chosen to focus on positive, lighthearted memories even though some negative memories have resurfaced.    In The Barn, interior and exterior views intersect, creating visual tension that invites viewers to recall their own memories. The small opening of the barn door draws the viewer inward while simultaneously transporting them outside. Subtle imagery of distant trees reflects time spent exploring the trees that bordered the pasture.  The teapot, The Granary, recalls the interior space where my brother and I spent many hours playing. We watched our grandfather scoop wheat into bags and carefully weigh them on a dusty scale. This scale held our attention long enough for him to work uninterrupted. Inside the vessel, objects from this space are both painted with underglaze and recreated in clay, inviting viewers to step back in time.  July 21, 1969, reflects on the day man first walked on the moon.
